ప్రారంభ జీవితం
1945 జూన్ 25న తెనాలిలో జన్మించిన శారద (అసలు పేరు సరస్వతి దేవి) చిన్నతనం నుండే నాటకరంగంలో. 1960లో తమిళ 'కణవణే కంకండ దైవం'తో అరంగేట్రం, తర్వాత తెలుగు, తమిళ, మలయాళ సినిమాల్లో సమాంతరంగా పనిచేస్తూ త్రి-భాషా నటిగా స్థిరం. పేరు 'శారద'గా మార్చింది దర్శకుడు A. P. నాగరాజన్.
మలయాళ చిత్రాలలో ఔన్నత్యం
మలయాళంలో P. భాస్కరన్, M. T. వాసుదేవన్ నాయర్ చిత్రాల్లో గంభీర పాత్రలు. 'తులాభారం' (1968 — మలయాళం) — తొలి జాతీయ చలనచిత్ర పురస్కారం (Bharat Award for Best Actress). 'స్వయంవరం' (1972 — అదూర్ గోపాలకృష్ణన్) — రెండవ జాతీయ పురస్కారం. మలయాళ ఆర్ట్ సినిమాలో ఈమె నటన ఒక బెంచ్మార్క్.

'మంచి కుటుంబం' (1968), 'మరిచిపోలేని కథ' (1969), 'జీవన తరంగాలు' (1973), 'శారద' (1973 — 'ఊర్వశీ' బిరుదు మూలం) — ఇవి తెలుగు ఆడియన్స్ హృదయంలో నిలిచిపోయిన చిత్రాలు. NTR, ANR, శోభన్ బాబు, కృష్ణ — అన్ని టాప్-హీరోలతో నటించింది. మూడవ జాతీయ పురస్కారం 'నిమజ్జనం' (1977 — తెలుగు)కు.

Early Life
Born Saraswati Devi on 25 June 1945 in Tenali, Andhra Pradesh. She joined theatre as a child and made her film debut in the Tamil 'Kanavane Kankanda Deivam' (1960). Director A. P. Nagarajan renamed her Sharada, and across Telugu, Tamil, and Malayalam cinema she rose to become one of the most-demanded tri-lingual leads of the 1960s and 70s.
Heights in Malayalam Cinema
It is the Malayalam phase of her career that produced the most enduring critical legacy — heavy-character roles for directors like P. Bhaskaran and (later) parallel-cinema sensibilities. 'Thulabharam' (1968, Malayalam) won her first National Film Award (Bharat Award for Best Actress). 'Swayamvaram' (1972), Adoor Gopalakrishnan's directorial debut, won her a second National Award. Her Malayalam work is studied as a benchmark for early Indian art cinema acting.
Telugu Legacy
'Manchi Kutumbam' (1968), 'Maricipoleni Katha' (1969), 'Jeevana Tarangalu' (1973), and most pointedly 'Sharada' (1973, which gave her the 'Urvashi' epithet) — she paired with every leading Telugu hero of the era including NTR, ANR, Sobhan Babu, and Krishna. Her third National Film Award was for the Telugu 'Nimajjanam' (1977). She withdrew from regular work in the late 1990s and is recognised by AP and Kerala state honours as one of the most consequential South Indian lead actresses of her generation.
