ప్రారంభం
1962 ఫిబ్రవరి 12న విజయవాడలో జన్మించిన జగపతి బాబు, ప్రముఖ తెలుగు నిర్మాత V. B. రాజేంద్ర ప్రసాద్ (జగపతి ఆర్ట్ ప్రొడక్షన్స్) కుమారుడు. తండ్రి బ్యానర్ నుండి 1986లో 'సింహ స్వప్నం'తో నటనా అరంగేట్రం. ప్రారంభ 80ల్లో మాస్ హీరో పాత్రలు, 90ల్లో రొమాంటిక్ లీడర్గా స్థిరం.

'సూర్యవంశం' (1998), 'ఆహ్వానం' (1997 — ఉత్తమ నటుడు ఫిల్మ్ఫేర్ సౌత్), 'పెదరాయుడు' (1995) — ఈ చిత్రాలు అతని కెరీర్ హై-పాయింట్లు. విభిన్న పాత్రలు — విప్లవకారుడు, తండ్రి, రీయూనియన్ హీరో — అన్నీ నిర్వహించాడు. స్థిరంగా బాక్సాఫీస్ హిట్ ఇచ్చిన దశాబ్దం.

Origins
Born 12 February 1962 in Vijayawada, Jagapathi Babu is the son of V. B. Rajendra Prasad, the prolific Telugu producer behind Jagapathi Art Productions. He launched in 1986 with 'Simha Swapnam' under his father's banner. Early-1980s mass-hero roles transitioned into a 1990s romantic-lead identity that became the cornerstone of his career.
The 1990s
'Aahvanam' (1997) won him the Filmfare South Best Actor award; 'Suryavamsham' (1998) and the 'Pedarayudu' (1995) ensemble remain among his most-cited performances. Across the decade he handled revolutionary, paternal, and redemption-arc lead roles with consistency — a steady box-office presence rather than a phenomenon, which is harder to sustain but pays in decade-on decade.
Reinvention as Antagonist
In the late 2010s Jagapathi Babu engineered one of the most successful reinventions in Telugu cinema — stepping back from solo-hero positioning to take heavyweight antagonist, godfather, and patriarch roles in pan-India tentpoles. 'Srimanthudu' (2015 — Mahesh Babu's father), 'Legend' (2014 — opposite Balayya), 'Rangasthalam' (2018 — Phaneeshwar Rao), 'Saaho' (2019), and 'Vakeel Saab' (2021) belong to this second arc. The reinvention is now studied as a model for how to navigate the third act of a leading-man career.
